Glorious glorious sunshine.
We spent every last minute of this weekend outside, playing in the garden, lounging in the hammock (in between being beckoned to fix train tracks, fill buckets with water and look at worms), planting new veg, tending to the seedlings and watering everything in sight. I maintain that being outside with the kiddos makes life 100x easier and although my husband would say ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices’, it definitely helps when it’s dry and the sun graces us with it’s presence.
This weekend we ventured off to Open Farm Weekend, an initiative supported by The Bank of Ireland, Ulster Farmers Union & the Dept for Agriculture and Rural Development. Over 20 farms across NI flung open their barn doors and invited the general public to come along to learn about food production and farm life. It was so great to see so many people on social media taking them up on the invitation and it seems like the weekend is gaining more support each year. We have farmers in the family, so Levi is already pretty familiar with farm-life but special weekends such as this are just a great opportunity to support our local producers.
A few of our local farms were participating, so we made a couple of visits. First stop on Saturday was Poyntz Farm, a family run operation that welcomed everyone in with the greatest example of true Northern Irish hospitality. They had all kinds of animals to hang with, tractors to sit on, a full yard full of toys trailer rides, races in the fields and unending cups of tea!
On Sunday we hit up Armagh Apple Farm – another local producer that makes the best damn cider I ever did try. Again, so much for the kids to do with treasure trails, tractor rides through the orchards in apple carts, pressing our own apple juice and sampling the goods from other local vendors selling apple based products.
Papa Andrew grew up on an orchard farm so he was in his element!If you are local, you should really check it out next year – such a simple but fun way to get us thinking about where our food comes from.
